Description
The Wireless-G WRT54GL Broadband Router is really three devices in one box. First, there's the Wireless Access Point, which connects both screaming fast Wireless-G (IEEE 802.11g at 54 Mbps) and Wireless-B (IEEE 802.11b at 11 Mbps) devices to the network. There's also a built-in 4-port full-duplex 10/100 Switch to connects wired-Ethernet devices together. Connect four PCs directly, or attach more hubs and switches to create as big a network as needed. Finally, the Router function ties it all together and the whole network share a high-speed cable or DSL Internet connection.

Strengths: Very easy to set up.
Weakness: None so far.
This router was very easy to set up. I have 2 laptops and a desktop running off of it, and no problems as of yet. I understand there is some third party software that will extend the features of this router. Going to try that out when I get a chance.
Strengths: This router is easy to setup! The one-step button on the front of the router is exactly that - ONE STEP! I decided upon this product after reading other reviews outlining the product's reliability.
Weakness: NONE
The Linksys WRT-54GL is an excellent product. The one step set up button works just as proclaimed! I am not a techie. It took me about 15 minutes to go through the included CD, and complete the set up. Truly an easy product to use, just right out of the box. If you want a product that is reliable, and easy to set up right out of the box, you must consider this product. This product was my first...
Strengths: Essentially an older sibling of the WRT54G (v4.0 hardware under the hood) offering the versatility and reliability on which the Linksys 54G router built its reputation over the years.
Weakness: Effectively paying a premium for older (better) hardware.
After hearing reports of connection drops with the WRT54G, it was an easy choice to go for the sure bet in the WRT54GL. They'll both do the job, but the Linux software upgradability and steady wireless connections of the GL at a few dollars more make it the better buy. The software might not be the easiest for beginners, but that's just a result of all the options and features it puts together in...
Strengths: Easy setup on the Linux platform.
Weakness: None so far.
Good router. Easy to setup on the Linux platform. I was dreading the setup but everything worked just fine. I am very happy about this. I would purchase this item again.
Strengths: Best part about this router is the ability to flash it with new firmware from the linux community.
Weakness: None.
The router is easy to set up with the included instructions. Just install the software first then plug the router in. Additionally, for those that want to do more with this router there is so much information about the upgrades, but I like this link for beginners to get started: www.lifehacker.com/sof... The reason I got this router was for the ability to adjust bandwidth according to priority. I...
Strengths: Performance, Reliability, 3rd party upgradeable
This is the successor to the excellent wrt54g model from linksys. it works just as well and is upgradeable via 3rd party free firmwares liek DD-WRT and others. range is pretty good in my 2-storey house and never need to reset it. excellent.
Strengths: Great performance, very reliable, 4MB flash that can have 3rd party (linux) firmware installed.
Weakness: Linksys downgraded the flash on the WRT54G, so people wanting a full featured linux firmware image need to get this model (WRT54GL).
I'm not sure how the default firmware works (it supposedly has QoS and stuff now). Installed 3rd party firmware (dd-wrt) without issue, works flawlessly. Great speed, great reliability, great range, great router for linux enthusiasts.
Strengths: 3rd party firmware upgradeable
Weakness: More expensive than other brand.
Actually, this is an old model of Liksys WRT54G (version 4 or lower) which has more capacity for the firmware than these day's model (version 5). You can upgrade the firmware with 3rd party firmware.
Strengths: Set-up was not too difficult.
Weakness: Some of the instructions are ambiguous and confusing at times. The $10+ premium compared to WRT54G.
I am using it in conjunction with my Bellsouth DSL service and Westell modem. Overall, I am satisfied with it. The "SecureEasy" setup was not quite easy and ambiguous. I wish the printed manual was provided in the box along with the documentation on the CD-ROM. However, I am not sure if this Linux based product is worth the premium compared to WRT45G unless one were to take advantage of some...
The Linksys WRT54GL is a Linux-based Wireless-G Linux Broadband Router created specifically for ‘hobbyists and wireless aficionados.’ A child of the WRT54G series, the WRT54GL is a reissue of version 4 of the original, built primarily to support third-party firmware based in Linux. Like the original, the WRT54GL complies with both 802.11g and 802.11b (2.4GHz) standards. Plus, it...

The WRT54GL was created when Linksys shrunk flash memory size on its WRT54G to prevent alternative firmware loading. But the GL has its own problems, especially with routing throughput.

Good
Strengths: 3rd party firmware, good performance with optional firmware.
Weakness: Linksys firmware
The wrt54gl is a good router with ok performance. The good thing about wrt54gl over wrt54gs and wrt54g that it can be flashed with 3rd part firmware without complicated procedure. I ran some test on speedtest.net with qos enabled router got 8ms ping compared to dlink dir655 7ms. Though router doesn't disconnect itself like dir655. Some people like wireless N router so don't. Compared to dlink...
