Description
The DI-514 combines the proven stability of 802.11b wireless technology and D-Link's own robust firewall security features. The DI-514 is ideal for those creating their first wireless network, as well as for more advanced users looking for additional management settings and policy-based content filtering. Filters can be set based on MAC address, IP address, URL and/or Domain Name. A simple yet intelligent, web-based setup wizard makes the DI-514 easy for any user to quickly and securely connect computers to share a high-speed Internet connection, files, resources, games or just to communicate. An integrated 4-port switch allows direct connection of up to four computers. Several wireless clients can also securely connect to the network using 64 or 128-bit WEP encryption. Additional advanced features include pass-through of multiple concurrent IPSec and PPTP VPN sessions for telecommuters or for anyone who needs to transmit sensitive information more securely. The D-LinkAir DI-514 is the ideal networking solution for small business, workgroups, home offices, and schools.

Strengths: Cheap
Weakness: Have to keep resetting my router and modem, causes network crash.
I bought this router because of the D-Link brand name. It worked fine intially but later on I learnt that it was casing network connection drops. This did not happen when I hardwired my modem to my computer. I had to keep power cycling my router and modem. Totally frustrating. The tech support people simply asked me to download Service Pack 4.
Strengths: It works adequately as long as it's not in a mode that crashes your system.
Weakness: NMI parity errors freeze your system. NO TECH SUPPORT.
For 3 months I have been pleading with D-Link to fix their buggy software. For 3 months I have heard nothing. Not only does their product cause system crashes with NMI parity errors, they won't even try to support the customer. If you have some versions of a Compaq PC the have a workaround that MAY fix your product. You get to go in and modify your BIOS. However, if you don't have a Compaq, or...
Strengths: Stable
Weakness: Lack of setup features but is fine for most users.
hey ksayers (1-st reviewer), you are wrong. D-link is not a junk, your compaq is. Look around. Compaq does not rank anywhere, either laptop or desktop. Browse the internet or read computer magazines at Borders.... Anyway, I've been monitoring my neighbour's D-Link wireless for almost a year and it's always on 24/7 together with my Linksys router. Sometime I used it for experiments (it is not...
Strengths: Very inexpensive, good user interface
Weakness: Got one to work with a cable modem, couldn't get the other to work with a DSL modem under any circumstances
The 514 that I set up for a client with a cable modem worked flawlessly the first time; it's setup wizard was strong and navigation through the rest of the routers web interface was easy and intuitive. However, a subsequent purchase for a client with a DSL modem was a disaster. I couldn't get the two to work together under any circumstances, and repeated calls (Over 3 hours worth) to both the...
Strengths: great features and good interface
Weakness: low signal strength
This router is very small. Its also very cheap and has a good interface. setting up wep was simple and i was pleased with its overall stability. I never encountered any problems with it. the only weakness is that the signal strenth barely leaves the house. It could just be my location. And having a signal stay inside a house is a blessing in disquise to keep wardrivers out of your network
Strengths: IP association with Mac adress
Weakness: Network crash all the time Really slow network performance through wired and wifi Config menu don't work all the time Mac filtrer also do the wired part of the network
This product is good only to be used as a target at the firing range. Every time I want to send a file trough a service using http protocol it crash. Also, some time the menu in the config don't show correcly. The mac adress filtering lock the wired part of the network. I won't recommand any D-link product as I got the same network crashing problem with an other wired model.
Strengths: Inexpensive, easy to setup, nice web interface, Easy WEP (See Below)
Weakness: Some compatibility (speed issues) using a wireless "802.11g" card of a different brand.
D-Link has by far the easiest WEP password setup of any of the major competitors (including Linksys, Netgear, and SMC). To achieve 128 bit Encryption, You can actually use a simple "Human" ASCII text of 13 letters and / or numbers as your WEP Password. No more (impossible to remember) 26 character Hex code. When you have guests over they simply enter this easy to remember 13 letter and number...
D-Link Wireless Router
Strengths: Cheep. Seems to be compatible with many network cards.
Weakness: Unstable - need to be resetted every couple of days Buggy (see list below).
I use version B (not sure if C has the same problems) Software is buggy. - remote admin doesn’t save configuration - static DHCP doesn’t show host list properly - need disconnecting power cable to reset if something happens to WAN - stops working periodically, need to be resetted every couple of days Reverting to ‘initial’ version 1.0 seems to fix all of the problems above (see the 5*...
