Strengths: This 510A is easy to update the firmware via their website, It is easy to use and is very reliable. I've burnt over 400 CD's and DVD's without 1 problem.
Weakness: No weakness that I can see other than it only burns at 4X, which at the time was the fastest burner out there.
For someone buying their first burner, I highly recommend this one. The biggest thing to remember when using a burner, especially a DVD burner is to be sure the burner drive is set as your MASTER on the #2 IDE controller. Do not slave your burner to the hard drive. I paid $250 for my drive but now that there actually under $100, Im going to buy 3 more. *** I read that some were having problems...

I bought this pre christmas to burn sections of family home videos for the rest of the family that didn't have copies on VHS. The burning quality is great. If your VHS is bad, that's what you get on your DVD. The speed of the actual burning process is okay but of course I want faster. The face could have been optional though. And make sure to review the software your going to use, it makes A LOT...

I goofed up the first two disks, after that clear sailing. Recommend this product highly. Have used with a variety of software products and media from the WEB and Costco. Not a lick of problems. Recording time more a functon of processor speed, memory and disk than DVD burner. Can now burn a complete DVD in less than 30 mins.
Strengths: durability, accuracy, dublication and reprduction exellent 8 meg buffer.
Weakness: price
I have burned 40+ movies without any problems,plus alot editing my home movies. a solid performer and great value!!! New 530 8x drive only has 2meg buffer as do all other competitors,price has dropped fast due to technology saturation as always

Weakness: A bit slow, but worth it
I buy Princo DVD-R media with the white top on ebay and they work flawlessly in this burner. I love it and have no complaints. By now they probably have faster burners, but for the money you can get this for now, it's worth it. Burn overnight. In the morning, you're done. I wanted an all-format in case I need to play DVD+R, but most stand alone DVD players will play DVD-R.
Strengths: This product is the best I have seen out on the market.

Sony dvd burner (Dru-510a) Best prouduct around, I really don't know how I have survived without one before now. If I had 2 computers I would have 2 of these.

The very best dvd r/rw drive around!!! It having the Sony namebrand is excellence in itself. Makes excellent copies of anything. If I build another computer this drive will surely be in it! EXCELLENT!!!!

Weakness: Writing to DVD-R media has been a bit sticky to say the least. Lost 2 out of 9 DVD's.
I use this drive with Nero 6.0 and the results have been very impressive. Ok...so I lost 2 DVD-R media but I'm very impressed the the ability and make of the drive so far. Strengths: Versatility of media selection is a big plus!
Weakness: Software bundle included with the packaged drive is not quite the best. Stick with Ulead DVD Movie Factory or Nero for better authoring.
There's not much to go wrong with Sony's high quality products and this is an excellent example. Burn speeds, ease of installation, quiet drive activity and choice of + or - media for make for a great package. With the prices dropping recently this will make an excellent upgrade to any multi-media system.

thank goodness i have another DVD-ROM drive to read my DVDs because this sony is 40% the speed of my other DVD drive. Hopefully I'll get a 16x soon
