Sony takes the risk out of buying a DVD recorder by bringing all the popular formats into a single drive. The amazing DRU-500A burns DVD-R/-RW, DVD+RW/+R, and even CD-R/CD-RW discs. Internal EIDE drive includes an impressive, industry standard software bundle and is compatible with Windows 98SE/2000, Windows ME and Windows XP operating systems. DVD+RW and DVD-RW discs recorded on this drive may not play back on some older or entry-level DVD systems. The write-once DVD+R or DVD-R discs are more compatible for interchange with other DVD systems. Please record responsibly. Strengths: Ability to burn virtually all DVD and CD formats (save DVD-RAM), flawless burns -- not one coaster yet.
Weakness: I agree that the Veritas software package isn't the greatest, but I really like what looks to be the full version of Sonic's MyDVD software that came with my drive.

Strengths: Handles just about any media type, good cd write speeds. Easy install
Weakness: Some cheaper media can cause coasters. Slow DVD read speeds locked at 2x. So users will need a separate DVD reader.Users UPGRADE to latest 1.0d firmware ASAP to avoid DVD media burn issue.
Only issue is finding cheap DVD-R 2x and later 4x media...and doing the firmware upgrade to avoid coasters. Works in internal or external firewire encloseure. Nero users make sure to upgrade to latest version as well.

11-27-02 installed one unit in external ads usb 2.0 case... installed software that came with unit and found some quarks with recordnow and found Nero worked on unit perfectly so far...... firmware upgrade was easy from 1.0c to 1.0d.... sony to come out with 1.0e x4 write speed....soon.... so far it seems to be the real thing as advertised.... Strengths: Burns all formats, very dependable, once you learn what you're trying to do.
Weakness: The only weakness that stands out is the inexperience of the user.
I purchased my machine mainly for transforming DivX and mpeg files into DVD movies. At first I had many problems and made several coasters. Like most people, I blamed it on the unit and did my share of cussing, but after doing some real research at DVD-R helpsites I learned that the process is much more complicated than just opening a file with Nero and clicking "burn". Strengths: Was able to burn 3.8GB of data in ~ 26 minutes, great for backing up data and other things. Its also very nice to be able to write to all the different formats of dvd media, except for dvd-ram media.
Weakness: Haven't found any yet.
Upon recieving the drive it has worked perfectly. It was easy to install and there is enough software to get you up and running for all your needs. The drive is fast and reliable and have been able to burn to all dvd media that it supports. The only thing you need to worry about is burning to verbatim dvd-r media that was produced before october 31, 2002. Otherwise all othe media works.
Strengths: Burns in all popular formats.
Weakness: A little picky about what media you use.
I purchased 2 of these drives a few months ago. At first I was very satisfied (several burns with no issues) But later after purchasing a test DVD-R pack I was a little disappointed that only one manufacturers disk (Ritek) burned consistently. Since then I have stuck to the Ritek media and have never failed a burn. All in all, pretty darn good product.

This burner is by far the best I have seen. after a couple days of testing it has performed at 110%. Not only did it burn 9/9 dvd+r's and 2/2 dvd+rw flawlessly it went 59/59 with the cdr media(cheap generics that have failed often in the past)and the reason I say 110% is after popping in about 5 of my cdrw's I had been using for various durations it found different types of errors left over from...
