Strengths: Easy to get up and working, web interface is easy to use. Talks SMB and AFS protocols, as well as http and ftp.
Weakness: Runs windowsXP, which has a subset of network and volume management tools available, and also means thet integration with UNIX machines is going to use smb.
Setting up the NAS was easy, and using it from a SMB enabled linux machine or a windows machine was easy as well. Not a lot of logging info if you run into problems. Backup from the web interface is anemic (can't make scheduled backups, you may be able to do this if you log into the server locally and mess around with embedded XP). Why they chose embedded XP is beyond me, linux whould have been...
Strengths: looks nice.
Weakness: XP embedded is slow! unexpected down time required restart. HUGE! Needs deep rack.
Unit failed within 2 weeks. Company support was not useful-- they gave me a number for a data recovery service--$8000 to retrieve our data. If you use behind a firewall, the home page of the unit does
Good and Ugly
Strengths: Great Price - Great Possiblities
Weakness: Not designed for heavy usage
Bought several. The embedded windows xp system will not handle really heavy backups - coping large blocks of data that takes 12 - 24 hours. XP does not have raid capabilities. Lacie wrote a small application that does software raid and creates a large virtual volume that xp sees as a single drive. Bottomline, this is a compact motherboard with 4 500 gb drives attached. I hooked up an external...
