Instructions included are labeled Quick Install Guide, they are just that. quick, easy to follow and the the drive shows just like it is supposed to on my XP machine. I was pleased the drive is smaller in footprint than some of its capacity and operated very quietly. The blue light underneath is a pleasant little glow on the decktop.
Strengths: American product, EXCELLENT US-based technical support, 2 year warranty, clean compact design, quiet, on/off switch.
Weakness: None that I've found so far.
I was attracted to LaCie because they're an American company, located here in Oregon. Their tech support is also here in Oregon, not outsourced to a foreign call center (at least as of this date). I compared this model (301302U) to LaCie's other 500GB external model (301285U). The determining factors (for me) were the warranty and a power switch - Warranty: The Neil Poulton model has a 2-year...
Strengths: Setup easy. Compact. Backup Software included. On/Off Switch. Lots of storage space.
Weakness: None
Nice design. Using drive as a backup drive. This one comes with software preloaded on the drive. No CD-Rom needed. Setup was very easy right out of the box. Once setup backing up your files is very straight forward. Once click on the icon does it all. It has a stylish blue light to tell you it is on. We dont actually keep it running all the time - Only when doing backups. It has an on/off switch...

LaCie Hard Disk External 500GB Hard Drive Design by...
Strengths: Very well designed and attractive. For Mac users, set up is virtually instantaneous, using Time Machine, after which, it pretty much takes care of itself. It can be partitioned, if you so choose.
Weakness: Don't know of any.
I bought the LaCie 500GB because, after much reading, it seemed to be the best choice for backing up my iMac. Installation and start up were a breeze - maybe 10 minutes.
