I needed a drive to replace a failing external hard drive, and this one does the job, what more can I ask for? Quiet, quick, and mass storage space! Great buy for the money!

I purchased 3 of these for work and initially they work quite well so I bought one for myself at home. Then all of them within a 9 month period failed. Every last one of them. I sent one back in for repair and they sent me back another one, but the other units had sensitive data on them so I couldn't send them back in. Gave up on them and won't buy from LaCie anymore.
Strengths: It does just what I expected it to do. What more do I want?
Weakness: Nothing significant has bothered me.
I bought a near-identical drive about 6 months, and am very satisfied with that one also. You plug them in, connect the firewire cable, say yes to Time Machine, and you're in business.
Strengths: sleek silver brick drive, variety of cables, very reliable brand
Weakness: heavy, power cable is thick and not extremely flexible. doesn't come with a firewire cable anymore.
I've been using LaCie big disk extreme hard drives ever since I worked in VFX at Warner Bros. I really trust this brand--they're all I buy! The hard drive is very sleek and will fit inside a Pelican case. It comes with a stand that you can mount it on vertically. Has a cool blue shortcut button, which is programmable.
Strengths: Ease of use, Reliability, Performance

I have been using this drive for 6 months for videos, music, photos and backup. I do travel with it occasionally and it continues to perform well.
Strengths: Nice looking unit, fast, 3 connection types is a plus
Weakness: Off/Auto/On switch is cheap and can become difficult to select if used often (most users will probably leave it in auto). Power cable is THICK and bulky.
This is the 4th drive I've purchased in the past year and I had 1 repaired (losing all the data on it due to their policy of repair) I've now had 3 of them fail. LaCie does not offer to save your data on a repair so I've not sent in the last 2 units for repair as I'm sure it's just the power supply or interface card. I bought yet one more unit to try and use to recover the data from the other 2...

Had mine for just over 1 year, with Timemachine. Then disk failure. Very disappointing for a semipro positioned device of this type to fail so quickly. Would never buy one again. Can recommend Freecom - bought one as a replacement, run silently, cheaper and getting better throughput.

Weakness: Everything. From the product to customer service, to tech support, to bad drive being replaced with another bad drive. The hard drives are badly designed and run hot.
WARNING!! I highly recommend NOT getting a LaCie. Their products are OVERPRICED PIECES of JUNK. (I know, I was foolish enough to buy two drives) My 1TB hard drive just up and died one day while I was in the MIDDLE of backing up my data (from the LaCie to another hard drive). LaCie tech support is AWFUL. The wait is long, the people are rude, and you have to package and pay for shipping yourself...
