Junk. Lost all my backup including photos and music. One drive goes, data cannot be recovered on the remaining four drives. Replaced with a new drive that had bad sectors on it. Weight is like a car battery so shipping for repair has cost about $200 now. Now my unit is making noise. Lacie says to backup the data. To what? This is my backup drive. I'll never buy a Lacie product again. Never.

After having this drive for about 4 months, during which it worked satisfactorily, it suddenly crashed hard, seemingly for no reason. Professional data recovery systems were only able to recover less 1% of the 850 GB of data stored on the disk. The rest was a total loss. All efforts to repair the drive structure also failed. Strengths: Auto-starts up when the computer boots up and auto-shuts down as well. Large capacity.

Strengths: huge rugged and quiet, nice design, impressive firewire 800 transfer speed
Weakness: actually two 500gb drives, a little bit heavy
I own this huge drive almost one month now, and so far, it works good. It offers great storage for video editing and is good for auto backup feature which is really useful to reduce the trouble of future data lost. It might be slow at times but I give it a thumbs up. Never had any trouble with this very big hard drive in every small and rugged casing.

Like everyone else says, the computer will frequently lose the disk. Restarting and resetting has worked to fix the problem so far, but I have had them only about six months. I have over a terabyte of music that has taken years to collect so I am nervous each time there is problems with these HD's. They are simply not worth the anxiety of losing data, dont buy!.

The Big Disk Extreme is the dual drive model of the LaCie d2 series. All drives come in a nice aluminum case and offer either USB 2.0, Serial ATA or USB 2.0 with Firewire 400 & 800. The latter models are called Extreme with Triple Interface.
